Rule #1: the pub has a flat roof
A simple rule to start with - the pub has a flat roof, thus it is to be avoided - unless you're looking to get tips for the next race at Newton Abbott or you want to buy a pack of fags sans tax.
The Golden Rules of Pubs
Being a blog regarding pubs in the UK and possibly the world.
Life is short. Too short to spend parts of it in substandard pubs. How does one know if a pub is substandard? In fairness to each and every public house, really one should spend an evening there and assess its pros and its cons. In reality? Life is short.
Thus, we offer a series of traits or observations that one can make regarding a pub without expanding very much time or energy. If a pub displays one of these traits then it's simply not worth bothering with.
There is an exception to every rule of course but generally speaking, if a pub breaks one of the golden rules of pubs then you are on dodgy territory. If a pub breaks more than one rule then it should be avoided if possible (and sometimes it isn't possible - if you want to watch a football match for instance). We are searching for a pub which breaks all the golden rules of pubs - we'd probably like that...
